Umah Cagaan

  • Location: Ubud
  • Number of bedrooms: 4
Umah Cagaan is an architecturally serious house — large, modern, comfortable — at the edge of a rural village in central Bali, 15 minutes’ drive from the town of Ubud with all its attractions. But guests might find that they prefer not to leave the villa at all. Umah Cagaan is well set up for holiday living, with lots of room to gather together or get away by yourself — and even to cook, if that gives you pleasure. The house has a beautiful, fully equipped modern kitchen and a special pavilion with a teppanyaki grill and seating for four.

Cagaan is the name of the village, and umah is a humble word in Balinese for ‘house’ — used ironically here for this handsome 4-bedroom villa built over three levels. Three principal buildings surround a broad grassy courtyard and a 16-metre long infinity swimming pool. The main house, which accommodates the master bedroom, kitchens, media room and spa room, features sliding glass walls that offer a choice of air conditioned or open-air living. In the garden (where guests can literally watch the rice grow in delightful little paddy fields), a large sala (Balinese pavilion) is open on four sides with two more bedrooms situated below it while, across the lawn, another two-storey building houses a gym and the fourth bedroom. With the bedrooms spread out over three buildings, there is plenty of personal space, which makes Umah Cagaan great for families. On the other hand, all but the master bedroom are accessible only by stairs.

A full-time staff, captained by an English-speaking Villa Manager, take care of housekeeping, cooking, and maintaining the pool and extensive gardens. A choice of breakfasts is included in the rental rate. Guests can either make lunch and dinner selections from the villa’s priced suggestion menu or, if you prefer to self-cater, the staff will shop for you.

Airport transfers and a daily shuttle trip to Ubud are also included in the villa rate. For day and half-day sight-seeing trips, the car is available for a reasonable fee with driver and petrol included.

Umah Cagaan is approached through a Balinese gate, along a jungle-like path, and across a broad wooden walkway over a koi pond. The main house enters into the living and dining area, with wide views to the garden and pool. Off to the right is a large, sunny kitchen, fully equipped including dishwasher and dedicated sound system. There is a comfortable kitchen table and another table with chairs on the kitchen’s large balcony. The kitchen staff prefer to cook in the small adjacent staff kitchen.

The living room, like the rest of the villa, is comfortably furnished and made bright with Indonesian textiles, modern paintings and several charming Javanese statues, some of which depict wedding couples, said to bring good luck. In the dining area, a long wooden dining table seats eight. A hallway leads to the master bedroom and also has a staircase down to the lower level, where the media room and spa room look out onto a jungly river ravine. A guest bathroom lies just off the living room.

All four bedrooms at Umah Cagaan are air conditioned and come with queen-size beds and ensuite bathrooms. The spacious master bedroom (with 32-inch TV, DVD player, and sound system) is just a few steps from the pool. Its large marble-lined ensuite includes a roomy walk-in dressing area, double vanity sinks, a terrazzo bathtub big enough for two and a shower. A second shower is situated outdoors on the wooden balcony. The media room is really a ‘home theatre’ with its 47-inch TV and comfortable chairs and sofas. The spa room has a dedicated sound-system, massage table, bathtub and a full bathroom. This entire building is air conditioned.

A smaller, free-standing building houses the compact but well-equipped and air conditioned gym, with a pleasant bedroom upstairs. A second stairwell connects this bedroom to the entrance pathway, giving the room private access. The wide view from the balcony overlooking the main villa compound explains why this bedroom is referred to as ‘Villa View’.

The sala is an unusual building. At first sight it looks simply like a large classical, open-sided Balinese pavilion furnished with dining table for ten, desk, and antique Chinese sofas. However, on closer Inspection, two stairwells lead down to two identical bedrooms with glass walls looking out onto jungle.

The 16m infinity pool is bordered by a broad deck furnished with six sun loungers and a table and chairs. Also near the pool is a small pavilion fitted with a teppanyaki grill and with seating for four.
