Umah Lu'ung
Drink in the views from each of the four self-contained suites, as well as from the top floor lounge and dining room; no-one misses out. Those in the kitchen can gaze through wide picture windows ensuring that budding chefs – and with all the cookery books around it’s likely the owners fall into this category – can share in the scenery too (though a wonderful cook is on hand to prepare your meals for you). The lap pool mirrors the lengthy layout of the property as it stretches along the side of the valley and shows off an infinity edge that blends beautifully with the tropical foliage rearing up inquisitively from below; ferns reach over the water’s surface from a thickly vegetated wall whilst a gnarled frangipani tree showers flowers onto the pool.
Umah Lu’ung’s setting amidst such lush vegetation definitely deserves exploration and you can walk right out into the rural scenery from the villa’s front door; views unfold as soon as you step outside, whilst strolls along the lanes here reward you with an insight into village temples and the lives of the rural Balinese. As well as the villa’s team of six kitchen and housekeeping staff, a car and driver is available at any time to drop you into Ubud and these transfers are included in the villa rate. Umah Lu’ung means ‘good home’ and for lovers of serenity and seclusion, the villa’s name rings true.

Umah Lu’ung’s main entrance takes you directly into the dining room where the valley views unfold through three sets of folding glass doors that lead onto a timber-decked terrace just above the swimming pool. A long table for up to 12 diners takes pride of place in the centre of the room whilst a staircase leads up to the top floor lounge, a huge open-sided space under a thatched roof, furnished with upholstered chaise longues and a second dining table for up to eight. Both the dining room and lounge are cooled by ceiling fans.
Flanking the dining room are a kitchen and library. Equipped with an oven, hob, microwave and various other appliances, the kitchen has wide windows to soak in the views and a back staircase to the top floor lounge. The air conditioned library has a long sofa, satellite channel TV and a stereo. Books – many of them culinary – board games and statues fill the bookshelves whilst a long desk with rattan wheeled chairs sits below the wide picture windows.
The four air conditioned bedroom suites are each located in stand-alone pavilions to either side of the main building. Each comes with a queen-size bed, muslin drapes, a lounge chair that doubles as an extra bed, flat-screen TVs (local channels only) with DVD players and bathrooms with walk-in dressing rooms, built-in tubs and both an inside and outside shower. The suites also have their own living areas furnished with dining tables for two, as well as lounge chairs: three also benefit from a small kitchenette that comes with a kettle, sink, microwave and mini-fridge.
