Upni Duniya

  • Location: Bang Rak-Big Buddha
  • Number of bedrooms: 9
Upni Duniya means a place where 'heaven embraces the earth’. Although this may sound a little exuberant, the villa certainly offers plenty of opportunities to appreciate the metaphor. Decorated with wooden carvings and stone statues, adorned with terracotta bas-relief sculptures and draped in soft Thai silks, the villa's seven pavilions were designed to reflect Asia's religious and artistic heritage, but with a contemporary twist.

Although the villa's ambience has been carefully crafted and stylised, right down to the illuminated pathways that guide you through the garden at night, Upni Duniya boasts plenty of practical features that make your stay feel relaxed and easy. The living, dining and kitchen pavilion is ergonomically designed and crammed with high-end technology such as Siemens kitchen appliances, touch pad music and lighting controls, plus a cinema-like plasma screen TV. The bedrooms also feature their own independent AV facilities including iPod docks, DVDs and personal satellite link-ups, so you're never short of light entertainment options.

Villa 9 is an extravagant addition to the property. A completely separate private residence within the villa grounds, overlooking the pool and sea with its own AV lounge, plunge pool jacuzzi and sun deck. This is actually the owner's personal suite, but can be rented for an additional fee if you yearn for extra private indulgence.

For more simple pleasures, the pool sala (gazebo) was specially designed as a personal, private island. Suspended in the swimming pool and shaded from the heat, it is while reclining on the soft cushions and gazing out to the soundtrack of the sea that you truly come to appreciate the villa's name.

A team of five full-time, live-in staff clean, guard and cater to your needs with an optional private chef available (service and provisions on guest account) for those used to five-star hospitality. The layout definitely suits families or groups of friends, but with the option either to book some of the rooms (keeping the others closed off) or taking the entire property, Upni Duniya is also a good choice for everything from a romantic break to a full scale wedding or celebration.

There's a visual symmetry to this villa that draws you in as soon as you enter the walled and gated entrance from the road. A path lined with statues, palms and plants leads the eye through the centre of the property, past lily ponds teaming with koi carp, down to the beachside pool and deck. At the start of the journey, twin two-storey buildings house a gym (downstairs left) and staff quarters (downstairs right). Upstairs in each building are two well-appointed bedrooms, one with a king-size bed and one with twin beds (ideal for families), opening onto garden and sea views. The rooms all have Sony Bravia standing flat-screen TVs and Denon music systems. Each suite is furnished in teak, with Asian inspired interiors and has an attached private bathroom with glass-walled shower.

Back at ground level, as you walk towards the sea, four sleeping pavilions with king-size beds are colour-themed in red, white, green and gold. All share the same layout, with vaulted wooden ceilings, spacious interiors, independent AV capability and indoor-outdoor bathing options including showers and stone tubs. All are furnished with soft sofas, writing desks and comfortable chairs.

Exclusive Villa 9 sits front left, with ocean views from its centrally placed, king-size bed. French windows slide open onto the jacuzzi pool and sun deck, while behind the bedroom a second outdoor jacuzzi separates the sleeping suite from the living room and personal cinema. Both rooms have attached bathrooms; the shower connected to the bedroom boasting sea views through a large picture window.

The living, dining and kitchen pavilion sits front right and opens on two sides: the front onto to the pool and Thai-style relaxation sala (facing the beach), and the left onto a terrace with outdoor dining table and sofa. Inside, the lounge boasts a large comfortable sofa, a unique square teakwood dining table for 16 and a fully-equipped kitchen with extended breakfast bar. Asian artefacts and well-stocked bookshelves add a homely feel.

The 85sqm infinity pool features sunken sun loungers, umbrellas and day beds, plus an outdoor shower and separate toilet. Steps lead from here down to a small gate that opens onto Big Buddha Beach.
