Victoria

This fabulous beach pad glorifies relaxation and subtly envelopes you in a warm, private and timeless embrace the minute you walk through the door. Life here is dominated by the sounds and sights of the glittering Indian Ocean; the tropical, palm-shaded garden appearing to drop effortlessly off into the sea. As you wallow in the inviting swimming pool at the heart of the verdant green lawn it’s a delight to gaze back at the multi-hued stripes of horizon and sky that are punctuated only occasionally by misty silhouettes of ships passing far out at sea. Spidery palms sway gently overhead and rustle in the breeze as the sun’s rays filter through the comb-like leaves and scatter shapely shadows on the ground.

Victoria was built over fifteen years ago as a contemporary reflection of a traditional Sri Lankan house. Thick walls, high timber ceilings and pillared verandas provide a touch of Dutch colonial inspiration whilst cool tiled floors are a treat on the feet. The property is homely and very restful, with five bedrooms located on either side of an open-plan, relaxing living area where you can kick back on vivid blue cushions and gaze out over the garden and pool to the mesmerising swell of the sea. Victoria’s traditional character comes across in the many reclaimed fretwork-enhanced window and door frames, stone thresholds and antique furnishings whilst the beachfront pavilion, wonderful swimming pool, movie room and the many concrete-based cushioned sofas bring the property more firmly up to date.

The villa has an excellent seaside location and as you drive the eight kilometres to Galle you pass a variety of beaches, restaurants and shops. Victoria also benefits highly from a very amenable staff team. The chef is very experienced and will treat you to a range of cuisines (provisions on guest account), whilst the waiters serve you discreetly, quietly and with a smile; the well-equipped kitchen is available for guests to use too. Since the lounging, dining and relaxing areas are almost hidden from the entrance and staff areas by the striking back wall of the open-sided living room it’s possible to enjoy the house almost exclusively to yourselves.

The entrance to Victoria is across stepping stones over a pretty lotus pond, with mottled goldfish swimming below and lily-pads floating atop. The house is in an H shape where two parallel wings on either side of the pond are connected to each other by a central open-plan living room that overlooks the sea. The back wall of the living room hides the entrance and pond from view as access into the heart of the house is via twin corridors that lead down each of the wings through archways to the right and left of this wall.

On the eastern side of the house are an air conditioned TV Room with satellite channel TV and DVD player, three bedrooms and a dining room (table seats ten) with fleeting glimpses through multiple sets of doors to the garden and sea. Each of the three bedrooms has a double four-poster bed swathed in soft mosquito netting, cupboard space and windows or doors onto a side garden scattered with frangipani flowers. Two of these rooms share a bathroom with both an inside – and a magical outside – shower whilst the other has its own ensuite.

On the western side of the house is a spacious fully-equipped kitchen with striking black and white tiled floor, big centre island and large oven. Also in this wing is a twin bedroom with four-poster beds and an ensuite semi-open-air bathroom with shower. Both of these rooms open onto the lotus pond. At the front of this western wing is the spacious master bedroom with antique four-poster bed and multiple sets of doors onto the garden with sweeping views of the sea (which can also be enjoyed from outside atop a cushioned seat cooled by an overhead fan). This bedroom has a tiled floor and a dressing area to the rear with twin antique Dutch wardrobes along with the other four bedrooms, it is fan-cooled. There’s a tub and shower in the bathroom, and also a private courtyard garden with atmospheric shower open to the sky.

At the far end of the garden overlooking the sea is a pavilion with cushioned seats for relaxing and a low table for informal dining or sipping relaxed cocktails at sunset within a whisper of the sea.
