The Villa at Echo Beach

Courtyard living looms large at The Villa at Echo Beach. Within the semi-open-air confines of this single-storey, four-bedroom property are a series of hidden courtyards – perhaps more in keeping with a town house than a close-to-the-beach villa in sleepy Canggu. Nevertheless, with its stylish modern interiors, the villa offers a peaceful retreat from the outside world. Large enough to accommodate six adults and four kids, The Villa at Echo Beach, with its sunny courtyards and small grassed areas – one of which runs alongside a gentle river – is ideal for kicking back and chilling out.

The main courtyard incorporates a sparkling 14m x 5m swimming pool running the whole length of the property, its cobalt blue tiles bringing a bright splash of colour to the white walls and dark timbers of the building. Eight evenly-spaced ornamental palms of equal height stand sentinel alongside the wall that borders the pool, with loungers positioned at both ends of the deck to catch the sun throughout the day. The villa’s cavernous interior has a vaulted roof, polished concrete floors, and alternating walls of white plaster and yellow ‘serai’ sandstone rocks randomly pieced together like a Byzantine puzzle.

Kids will be delighted by their bedroom – a spacious den with four beautiful black wooden bunk beds built into one wall like berths on a cruise ship, as well as a play area equipped with their very own flat screen TV, DVD player and Playstation. How cool is that!

The villa’s poolside living room is furnished with generous wicker chairs and sofas, ideal for aperitifs before an alfresco dinner at the courtyard table under a pergola roof or a more elegant indoor event. Perhaps most exciting of all – for kids of all ages – you can complete your evening at the home cinema with its 52-inch satellite channel TV and DVD player. The finishing touch is an excellent chef and lovely staff who will serve you meals and refreshments all day (provisions on guest account) if they can ever find you in all those hidden courtyards! Should you wish to explore further afield, a car and driver are also at your disposal.

The rusty hinges and nails on the magnificent front doors of The Villa at Echo Beach hint that this time-honoured portal could have been salvaged from a 19th century Dutch spice warehouse. Beyond, is a short pathway lined with a thicket of juvenile palms leading to a high-roofed portico, with two huge Dr Seuss-style pandanas trees bordering the pool. From here the whole villa is open to view. To the right, cooled by ceiling fans, is the open-plan, split-level living room, dining area and kitchen, which are flanked by bedrooms three and four, a guest washroom and the air conditioned home theatre. Two outdoor pergola-roofed decks (one off the kitchen and one off the dining room) provide alfresco sitting areas, while the kitchen is overflowing with all the bells and whistles for those who want to do it for themselves.

Framed black and white photographs adorn the house with scenes of everyday life in Bali, complemented by big colourful abstract paintings. All bedrooms are equipped with air conditioning, iPod docks, TVs and DVD players, and flanked by indoor bathrooms with walk-in rain showers. The master bathroom offers the option of an open-air bathing experience, with a bathtub positioned next to glass doors opening onto a private terrace in the riverside garden. The kids’ room has a great play area with comfy floor cushions, and can be converted to a family room with the provision of an extra queen size bed if required.

Under its soaring roof, the open-sided living room is casually furnished with uber-comfy wicker sofas, ottomans, a coffee table and standard lamps. Two steps lead from here into the open-plan dining room, which is furnished with a dining table for ten, handcrafted from a single piece of two-toned suar wood. The large-yet-cosy home theatre is fitted with built-in sofas with oversized cushions, and a library of books, board games and DVDs are housed in the shelves of a wall-unit.
