Villa Waru

  • Location: Nusa Dua-Tanjung Benoa
  • Number of bedrooms: 7
An artistic imagination has been left to run wild in Villa Waru as quirky, highly personal living space is gloriously combined with an enchanting garden design that’s heightened by moss-covered statues, meandering fish-filled ponds, painted timber doorways and placid pathways in amongst mature tropical vegetation that, although tamed, appears unrestrained. Waru boasts seven suites – split between two independent residences – and a number of quite different living and dining spaces, including paved verandas, poolside balés (gazebos) and open-sided dining terraces specifically placed to make the most of the tropical garden views. Each residence at Waru comes with its own special charm, and every suite is completely unique; the Garden Residence was the first to be built and contains four suites split between three buildings, two of which overlook the bigger of the villa’s two swimming pools whilst the Pond Residence, as its name suggests, magically floats atop a meandering waterway highlighted by lotus flowers, lily pads and greenery-speckled islands. The names of the suites – Colourful, Sparkle and Lucky Eight for example – are as imaginative, unique and characterful as the interiors themselves. Villa Waru follows its own design mould, blending Southeast Asian characteristics with Dutch colonial influence; artefacts and antiques from all over the region give each room its own distinct personality and charm, whilst other pieces have been specially commissioned to suit the artistic, whimsical atmosphere of the villa. Open-to-the-sky showers in some of the bathrooms celebrate the villa’s tropical location whilst romantic tubs sunken into ponds enveloped by wandering foliage and bursting blooms are a sure reminder that even though you might feel at home, you’re very definitely not. Waru is family friendly, through and through, with the garden, in effect, a theme park for children; its winding walkways and creature-filled ponds provide hours of fun whilst the plentiful hidden terraces and serene sitting spots are heaven for older members of the family. Inside the house children are kept further amused by stacks of beloved board games and numerous DVDs, whilst adults can make use of a well-thumbed library and underground bar, not to mention the services of a seven-strong staff team, including a competent cook and a car with driver. The villa is located in a secure estate close to Nusa Dua, with beaches only a short drive away.

Villa Waru comprises two residences – Pond and Garden. The Garden Residence overlooks the larger swimming pool and is made up of three buildings. In the main house are a ground floor living room with poolside pergola, and an entertainment room with a huge TV, a dining table for six, a Chinese opium bed and loads of DVDs, board games and toys. Leading off from here is the Colourful Suite, a twin bedroom with ensuite bathroom designed for children. Also on the ground floor is the Golden Suite, boasting a majestic, carved, queen-size, four-poster bed, a private veranda and a semi-outdoor bathroom with romantic sunken tub. On the first floor is the Teak Suite – a room made entirely of its namesake timber – with king-size bed below a netted canopy, a walk-through dressing area and bathroom with shower. Also on this floor is a spacious veranda with dining table for six, bamboo sofa and kitchenette with fridge and sink. Situated behind the main house is the Gecko Suite with queen-size four-poster bed and Balinese bathroom. It’s the most private suite and comes with its own living and dining pavilion (with kitchenette to the rear). In the Garden Residence’s third building is a fully equipped kitchen and a wide dining terrace where a solid timber table (seating 14) overlooks the pool. Home to three suites, the Pond Residence comprises two buildings and a second, smaller pool. The main suite, Lucky Eight, is the largest of Waru’s seven. Boasting an octagonal design it features a queen-size four-poster bed, a dressing room, bathroom with shower and sunken tub in a private garden behind. Upstairs is a library and underground is a stone-walled bar with pool table. Overlooking the pond is a second dining terrace with 14-seater table. Across from Lucky Eight are the final two suites; Sparkle – so-called for the chandeliers of hand-crafted brass and crystals that reflect the light cast from the pond – comes with a queen-size bed, a private furnished terrace for dining and a bathroom with tub and shower; whilst Purple is a huge room that boasts an enormous 3.4m-wide bed (actually three singles joined together). Coming with a kitchenette (sink, microwave, mini-fridge, and kettle) and a bathroom with shower and tub, this suite opens onto the swimming pool. All Pond Residence suites and Gecko come with their own TVs and DVD players.
