White House at Bird Lake No. 1

As you relax on the rattan sofa on the verandah overlooking the placid lake or enjoy a long, lazy lunch on the sundrenched dining terrace followed by a dip in your own private swimming pool, you feel very much at home in this fully-equipped self-catering villa. With a design that merges the indoors with the outdoors, celebrating the island’s stunning beauty and tropical climate, The White House at Bird Lake was inspired by the work of Sri Lankan master architect Geoffrey Bawa. A combination of construction materials, including timber, concrete, stone and metal, give this property a modern edge.

The design of the villa complements the sloping piece of land that it was built upon. The timber ceiling of the dining room soars metres above, making it feel spacious but not overwhelming. A staircase at the middle of the building zigzags up four floors housing a spacious mezzanine lounge, three bedrooms and a furnished roof terrace from where you can appreciate the lake views – especially with a chilled drink at sunset. The high ceiling, open plan design and airy nature of the build allows the air to circulate and ensures that the property remains cool, whilst the room layout is such that while it is sociable for groups, it is also intimate enough for a couple to enjoy.

The suitability of this villa as a holiday home is enhanced not only by its proximity to the famous beach resort of Hikkaduwa (3km) but also by its private pool, its kitchen – well-equipped for western cooks – and large lounge which features oversized squashy sofas and a flat screen TV/DVD/CD player with surround sound. Although the property is self-catered, a chef can be arranged on request (with notice and at extra cost), whilst Gunapala, the friendly housekeeper, discreetly cleans up after you. The White House at Bird Lake No. 1 has a sister property next door (the White House at Bird Lake No. 2) with an almost identical design. If booked together, these two properties would be ideal for larger groups or a couple of families.

Enter into the spacious mezzanine lounge, where a bright courtyard to the left is planted with a frangipani tree. The lounge is cooled by overhead fan and furnished with a large tangerine-coloured L-shaped sofa scattered with cushions, a large wooden coffee table and a cabinet housing a plasma screen satellite TV/DVD player with surround sound. An antique chest sits beside a small flight of steps (no handrail) that leads down to the dining area.

The ceiling of the dining room soars high above whilst folding doors open onto the front verandah with cushioned rattan seating overlooking the pool, garden and lake. A dining table for eight dominates this space, which is also furnished with a storage cupboard and a large desk. Standing fans keep you cool.

To the right of the steps is a guest toilet and beyond that the large, fully equipped kitchen. To the rear of the kitchen is a courtyard planted with herbs and, to the front, an outdoor dining terrace overlooks the pool with fixed concrete table and six chairs.

From the lounge, steps zigzag up to the bedrooms on the next three floors. On the first floor is a master bedroom with four-poster double bed, built-in wardrobe, ensuite bathroom with concrete tub and overhead shower and picture windows overlooking the pool, garden and lake. Also on the first floor is a second double bedroom with built-in cupboards, balcony overlooking pool and lake, and ensuite bathroom with shower.

Up the next flight of steps leading towards the back of the house is a twin bedroom with a mosquito net suspended above the beds, built-in cupboards, an ensuite bathroom with shower and louvered windows overlooking the gatehouse, driveway and villa opposite. There is also a window in this bedroom that looks down onto the dining area.

Up the final flight of steps to the front is the roof terrace which is furnished with a casual table and chairs and sun beds. From here you can gaze over the garden, pool and lake; it’s an especially good place to be at sunset.
