With an absolute beachfront location on the five-kilometre-long Natai Beach, Xana Beach Villa is the perfect place to savour sun, sand and sea. The 30-minute drive up from Phuket airport takes you past a handful of luxury villas, boutique resorts and lush palm plantations, while just across the road from the villa water buffalo wallow lazily in a lagoon shaded by towering coconut palms in a tableaux of rural life in tropical Thailand.

Purpose-built as a family escape, Xana Beach has five spacious ensuite bedrooms providing roomy comfort and privacy. The master suites offer more than a touch of romance with their wide sea views and custom-designed marble bathtubs for two. Movie-watching and formal dining are a delight in the centrally-located living and dining room, a bright space wrapped in glass on three sides. Clerestory windows and a vaulted ceiling drench this room with natural light and majesty. Eye-pleasing cotton curtains and bedding, rustic wood furnishings, Tibetan cabinets and an antique Balinese doorway add to the villa's welcoming feel and Asian-inspired charm. Subtle luxury is found within the villa's modern amenities, lovely landscaping and abundance of natural materials including marble, wood and stone.

Active ocean pursuits can be enjoyed courtesy of the complimentary kayak, boogie boards and windsurfing equipment. There's relaxation space galore on the large marble terrace and pool deck – kept cool by the gentle sea breezes and the best spot for enjoying the breathtaking sunsets. The rooftop patio offers a more private place to steal away for a nap or a quiet read. An expanse of lawn shaded by casuarina and palm trees stretches out between the pool deck and beach, giving plenty of running-around space for kids.

The lack of dining-out options in the immediate area is not a problem given the excellent meals prepared by the live-in cook (groceries on guest account), and the well-equipped guest kitchen may go largely unused for the same reason. Housekeeping is taken care of by a second member of live-in staff, while a concierge service assists with transport, excursions and bookings for restaurants, spa treatments and golf.

Xana Beach Villa is set in six separate pavilions, all connected by a roof cover that keeps the space between them shady and protected from the elements. The large double-height living and dining pavilion forms the central focus of the villa together with the abundant terracing that it completely opens out to. Furnished in a casual, rustic style with a sturdy wooden dining table providing seating for eight on one side and a living area with a flat-screen TV and DVD player at the other, this is a great spot for socialising and chilling out. Ceiling fans and air conditioning keep the space cool, day and night.

Two master suites are set in sea-facing pavilions on either side of the terrace, both featuring ensuite bathrooms and a unique custom-built 'super soaker' double bathtub and marble shower with two shower heads and several body-spray nozzles offering a spa-like bathing experience. A third guest suite is set in a pavilion beside the living-dining room, offering partial sea views and a private bathroom with shower. These three bedrooms are all furnished with king-size bed frames with twin bed mattresses set in them, the owner's preference for ensuring an undisturbed night's sleep! Two twin bedrooms at the back of the villa each have their own bathroom equipped with a shower. The twin beds in both rooms may be pushed together into a king-size bed, and one bed in each room has a trundle, offering families great flexibility in organising their sleeping spots.

The spacious western kitchen, set just behind the third bedroom suite, is equipped with modern appliances, including a gourmet coffee machine for making steaming cappuccinos in a snap, and a washing machine. Behind this is the outdoor Thai kitchen and staff quarters.

The real heart of the villa is its large terrace, well shaded by the villa roof and furnished with an eight-seater wooden dining table, a loveseat and six sunbeds around the nine-metre swimming pool. More terrace space is offered on the roof, which has a shady sala (gazebo) at each end and two massage beds for indulging in soothing back rubs (in-villa massages can be arranged, at a very reasonable rate) or a peaceful afternoon snooze. The spacious lawn and garden offers loads of space for enjoying the sunny outdoors should one need a change of scene from the pale sandy beach and balmy sea just a few steps beyond.
