Villa Yoyo

  • Location: Umalas-Kerobokan
  • Number of bedrooms: 5
Solid, spacious and central would be the key words that describe the delightful Villa Yoyo. Built when land was cheap (2000), the villa is extravagantly spacious especially given its highly convenient location along Batubelig road, on the borders of Seminyak and Canggu. It is certainly a rare find among the compact walled compounds that are popping up in the area now. Wide lawns dotted with fan, oil and coconut palms greet guests arriving through the carved double entrance doors. Frangipani, bougainvillea and coral trees add pleasing touches of colour. There’s more than enough room for a creative game of soccer, followed by a cooling dip in the 6 x 20m pool (plenty of steps for smaller kids) and then lashings of lemonade and home-baked cookies served by one of seven staff (including a chef who will provision and prepare meals on guest account). In the heat of the midday sun, a traditional jineng (stilted rice loft) makes for an outstanding shady adult-size playhouse, and a place for more adventurous kids to camp out. For adults there is a poolside bale (gazebo) with daybeds, or wide terraces and balconies for shade.

The living space is equally generous. Spread between a two storey main house and an adjacent single storey guest bungalow, Villa Yoyo has five large bedrooms, each ensuite, with lounge areas including TVs and DVDs. Furniture and trim is solid dark wood against stark white-washed walls with polished terrazzo floors and simple pieces of art. Heavy wood tables, chairs, desks and daybeds are spread throughout and contrast against the simple white covers with patterned cushions adding a dash of warmth. The dining table (seats ten) is over three inches thick and takes a small army to lift. Luckily there is an alternative (seating six) on the wide terrace which wraps around two sides of the building.

Batubelig could not be more convenient. Being on the fringes of Seminyak means a myriad of restaurants and bars are within easy reach, as is the beach, just 500m away. Yet the area is still blissfully peaceful – small wonder this villa is popular with families.

Villa Yoyo has two pavilions which border two sides of the large plot. A decked swimming pool sits out front of the two buildings among well kempt lawns. Upstairs in the main house are a kids bedroom with four single beds which can be joined to create two doubles, and a queen bedroom; each have ensuite shower rooms. Both rooms lead out onto a broad balcony dotted with giant urns. Two bench sofas provide pleasant views over the gardens and beyond the creeper covered 2m high wall that surrounds the property. Downstairs is the master bedroom with king four-poster, a TV lounge corner and a desk and daybed. The bathroom features a garden bathtub and separate inside shower, both in dark terrazzo with pebbled walls. Two large sets of patio doors slide back to reveal the garden and pool from a wide shady terrace which wraps around the front of the house – the rattan armchairs and sofas make a great place to watch the sun slipping over the horizon. A round breakfast table and stand-up bar complete the terrace furniture. One huge semi-open room, taking up most of the downstairs and separated into three distinct sections, constitutes the common living area: a comfy lounge with vaulted ceiling, lazy fans and TV and DVD player; an open study with an internet-connected computer, stereo and sofas; and the dining section which spills out onto the terrace through floor to ceiling patio doors. Off the common areas are a simple guest kitchen and, to the back, the staff quarters and wet kitchen where most of the cooking is done and the staff discretely retreat to until required.

The remaining two bedrooms are housed in the adjacent guest bungalow. Both rooms have queen four-poster beds, small lounge areas and ensuite bathrooms (only one with tub). All the bedrooms and common areas are air-conditioned.

In the gardens are a poolside bale with two large daybeds and a traditional alang alang thatched jineng hut which doubles as a kids play room. Underneath is a platform which is perfect for massages (costs extra).
